"National Post card project" unites saint rose of lima students and mary wade adult day center clients

New Haven, CT – It was a day of “relationships and collaboration” as eighth grade students from Saint Rose of Lima School in New Haven joined Mary Wade residents and Adult Day Center (ADC) clients for an intergenerational day of education and fun.

“It’s a wonderful program,” said Richard Knapp, eighth grade teacher at Saint Rose of Lima. “Our students love the program; it brings out the very best in each of them. Mary Wade runs a first-rate intergenerational program here and our students love being with the residents. The students walk to Mary Wade every Thursday morning, and they just can not wait to get there,” said Knapp.

The National Post Card Project, a project of the National Association of Adult Day Centers, is an activity where adult day care clients throughout the nation create postcards and, then, send them to fellow clients at adult day care centers throughout the country. The result: Each center receives loads of post cards from all over the nation. Some of this artwork is displayed at the Connecticut State Capitol, and the Mary Wade Home currently has about 30 pieces of “post card artwork” on display in its Adult Day Care Center.

“This is one of our favorite programs here at Mary Wade,” said Christina Dokas, Cooperative Recreational Director for Mary Wade. “The project really inspires our residents and they really enjoy having the students here,” said Dokas.

The Mary Wade Home has been rated "deficiency free" for 7 out of the past 10 years by the State of Connecticut. This annual report card indicates that the Home has met the standards for quality and performance established by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Trained inspectors look at over 150 regulatory standards, from meeting resident needs to safe storage and preparation of food. If any one of these is found lacking, a deficiency citation is issued.

Mary Wade is proud to be the only facility in New Haven County to have this excellent record.
